American Airlines Boeing and Airbus jets

AA at PHX

This is a great picture taken by a pilot while taxiing to Terminal 4 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

A nice mix of the old and new when thinking about today’s American Airlines.

The Boeing 737 and Airbus A319 and A320 jets are parked in the East Hold Bay while waiting for their respective gates to open up.

AA Maddog

I really like this foto of the American Airlines MD80s parked at their DFW gates. I’ve many fond memories of this once ubiquitous jet while flying for AWA & US Airways during the 80s & 90s.

Years ago, I commuted back and forth to ORD on the 80 for about two years. Therefore, the Maddog has a special place in my heart. My fave seat, A3!

I snapped this photo, as we were getting ready to depart PHX this morning headed to the Midwest. I turn to my right, while parked at the gate, and couldn’t believe what I saw!

A picture-perfect sight of the three tails exemplifying the past 27+ years of my professional airline pilot career – America West Airlines, US Airways and now, the new American Airlines.

AWA 30 Years Ago Today

America West Airlines (AWA) started scheduled passenger service 30-years ago today on August 1,1983.

The airline initially served four cities out of PHX Sky Harbor with three leased B737 jets and about 280 employees. Those cities were LAX, Colorado Springs, Kansas City & Wichita (see 1983 route map).

I remember this AWA passenger ticket jacket from the early days…

I started with AWA in January 1987 as a brand new B737 FO. The very first jet I ever flew – N181AW a B737-200. A check airman and a few of us from my initial pilot training class flew 181 from PHX–Yuma to practice our takeoffs & landings.

In the summer of 1989, I flew my first flight as a B737 captain on N165AW (B737-300) to San Diego and back.
